zen no ma|Izumi cotton
breathing fabric
Fabric carries the traces of time.
The softness when touched.
The way it responds to light.
And the texture that deepens
the more it is used.
There is a quiet beauty
that new things do not yet possess.
zen no ma’s Izumi cotton
comes from a Wazarashi textile workshop
with over a century of history.
We use an original Wazarashi fabric
developed more than a decade ago
by its third-generation artisan.
It is a rare deadstock cloth
that is no longer available today.
Woven slowly,
without placing excessive tension on the yarn,
allowing air to remain within the cloth.
The fabric that emerges
is unexpectedly soft for cotton,
with a quiet sense of depth and substance.
A texture almost like linen,
with a distinctly Japanese sense of lightness.
Without being overly finished,
a little space is left within the cloth.
That small amount of space
becomes softness
when it touches the skin.
Wash it, dry it,
and use it again.
Through this repetition,
the cloth gradually settles
into the rhythm of a person’s life.
It is not deterioration,
but the passing of time.
In days that pass so quickly,
you may find yourself
reaching for it again and again.
A cloth that gathers
the time of the person who uses it.
Simply accompanying
everyday life.
